7.1. In the postwar era, class and status divisions became increasingly pronounced in Detroit. Well-to-do blacks fled the inner city for enclaves like Conant Gardens, shown above, where they moved into spacious suburban-style ranch houses. Detroit’s poorest blacks, however, were increasingly concentrated in the city’s oldest neighborhoods, trapped in decrepit houses. The scene of children playing in a trash-filled alley, shown below, was taken in 1963, but could have been photographed twenty years earlier.
